We’ve kept the original exposed brick, wood flooring and steel columns in this Victorian Warehouse, working with architects Metropolitan Workshop. Brothers Tom and Ed Martin, who have been running The Well in St John Street, Clerkenwell for the past 5 1/2 years as well The Gun in Docklands since September 2004, have gutted the entire building to provide a beautifully restored First Floor Dining Room, a new Mezzanine area above the Pub and a newly cleaned and restored Ground Floor Pub. Dr Johnson's House is one of the few residential houses of its age still surviving in the City of London. Built in 1700, it was a home and workplace for Samuel Johnson 1748-1759, and it was here that he compiled the first comprehensive English Dictionary. Now restored to its original condition, the house contains panelled rooms, a pine staircase, and a collection of period furniture, prints and portraits. Situated to the north of Fleet Street, the house is found among a maze of courtyards and passages that are a reminder of historic London. Feliks Topolski’s eyewitness record of the twentieth century, depicts the iconic historic figures and the significant political and social events spanning nine decades. The Topolski Century is an evocative space that is ideal as an out of the ordinary location to hold events. The gallery is split into three arches. Two arches house the Topolski Century painted panels; the smaller Arch act as an education room as well as displays Topolski’s on-the-spot observations, sketches which form the substance of 2000 a hand-printed broadsheets, ‘The Chronicles’ that were produced between 1953 and 1982.
